I have photoshop cs2,and I really need to know how people make these kinds of backgrounds.
How they have a background then text over the background.
Because usually when you put text over a image it leaves a white background.

Text set in photoshop usually does not knockout the background. If the text is a photographic or vector element brought into photoshop as a layer, then you can set the blending option for the layer to multiply, and it will blend with the background.
How to set the blend option in Photoshop:
In the layers palette, select the type layer.
There is a pull down menu at the top left of the palette.
Set the layer blending mode to multiply.

if you mean having the text on the webpage over a website's existing background (not in photoshop) ....then they use a PNG file for the text.
make your text on a transparent layer in photoshop. if you have any other layers, then hide them (click the little eye next to the layer). You should now see a checkerboard background behind your text.
go to File %26gt; Save for Web... and choose PNG as the filetype.
(make sure transparency is checked)
PNG files save transparency information with the image, like a GIF file does... But where a GIF is limited to 256 colors, a PNG can have millions of colors, so you can have very nice graduated fades, etc.
this will create an image that is opaque where you have text, but transparent everywhere else, which will allow the web page's background to show through.
If you find that the transparent part is showing up white in your browser, it's because Internet Explorer 6 and previous versions don't display PNG files correctly. Do a google search for ';IE6 png bug fix'; (or something similar), and you'll find a small bit of code you can insert into the webpage that will fix the problem for anyone using IE6 that visits your page.
That is very, very simple to make. You will want to make a new RGB document that will be the right size to look good online. Create a new layer, fill it with your desired color. Then create rectangles with either you rectangular marquee tool or shapes tool. Fill those with a secondary color. For your text, you'll want to download a grunge font from a website like ';dafont.com';. As you make more and more names or phrases with text, simply rotate them to create the random look.

Should my photoshop document be cmyk or rgb?
My artwork is being designed from photoshop at 300 dpi. I will eventually place it in an illustrator document that is CMYK. Should I design my artwork in photoshop in CMYK? I usually design in RGB and convert it to CMYK TIFF before bringing into illustrator.Should my photoshop document be cmyk or rgb?

If this isn't done, the graphic will not print. Most printers will assign a technician to ';preflight'; the Illustrator file, to make sure the conversion is done, and to set the traps, chokes, bleeds and other steps needed to make sure the digtal file will run properly. The printer has to pay the tech to do this, so, will charge you accordingly. The more you prepare the file before sending it, the less the print job will cost.
This is one of the main reason I went almost 100% digital some years back. The more of these steps I can do, myself, the less I have to pay someone else to do them. PLUS, I still get to charge my clients for the time I spend doing this.

Well it depends on where the 'much lighter' is showing up; your screen or your printing? If it is just your screen I wouldn't be too concerned, as InDesign probably converted the color profile when you created the PDF, especially if your PDF contains other CMYK art.
It also depends on what type of pdf you created, whether it's color profile is CMYK, RGB or Grayscale and if you changed the resolution of your image in the PDF'ing process.
Really, the only place you need to be concerned about this is in your proofs. If you print the art from Photoshop directly, and then using the same printer, print it from your PDF, is there a difference? There shouldn't be.

Well you can take the picture and resize it, by going to edit: image resize, then in there on the top line enter the new resolution ( size). The lasso tool is just one of many ways to remove a background. You can use an eraser, use the magic wand or use the lasso tool.
Seeing as how you mentioned the lasso, here's what you do.
Select the lasso tool.
Click and hold in the left mouse button while you move around your image.
When you let go, your selection will be visible.
To add to what you already have selected, hold in the shift key.
To remove parts of what you have selected hold in the Ctrl key.

Any decent size computer store, or office supply store should have a couple of models for around $100. And yes, they should all work with Photoshop, or any other application that works with an ordinairy mouse.
You might also try Computer Geeks. (geeks.com) they offer an inexpensive DigiPro tablet for about $49. It works about as good as my Wacom Pen Partner, including pressure sensitivity functions. How do you change the background of a photo with adobe photoshop?
The best way would be to use your pen tool and outline the whole background you want to take out- zoom in to about 200% for outlining. In your paths pallette click on the path you just created and make a selection with a .5 feather. go back to your layers pallette and click on your layer. click on the mask button at the bottom of the layers pallette- its the rectangle with the circle in the middle. this will make the area you selected become masked out and it will be transparent. then choose the image you do want for the background- select, copy, and paste the image into your existing photo and put the new image layer under the first one. sounds complicated but its really not, and it doesn't take long. the longest part is the pathing which at first is difficult, but once you get the hang of it, its a piece of cake. If you need any more help with this please let me know- i do this kind of stuff for a living.

Eraser - use a high feathered eraser, to create a fade look on one side of a pic, lay the pics on top of each other, and they blend fairly well.

Using the Magic Eraser tool, click background areas to delete the pixels. The checkerboard pattern indicates a transparent background. Notice in the Layers palette that the Background layer automatically converts to a new active layer.
Then whatever you want to do with background.

I just got a copy of AP7, and I was hoping I'd be able to use it to convert some of my crappy bmp's to smoother, vectorized graphics. Can anyone tell me roughly how to find a vectorizing tool?Using Adobe Photoshop 7 to convert to vector graphics?

However, if you are going to either print them OR post them on the web, they will have to be rasterized, because you will have to flatten layers and that process will automatically rasterized (convert to pixels) the entire image.
Using the Pen tool requires that you ';trace'; over your bmp image. So you would set that up on one layer, and then in a second layer do the tracing.

If the layout people intend it for printed media, then you shold probably save in color-separated CMYK. You'll get four files, each representing the contribution of different inks to the printing process. Also, the bigger the better. I suggest you ask them what format they prefer.
If you intend this for the web, things get simpler. Usually saving to JPEG with a quality above 65-70% (you can tinker with the quality settings in PhotoShop in the save dialog somewhere) should produce a pretty decent picture with a small file footprint.

You need to use an sRGB profile for your image - if necessary Image %26gt; Mode %26gt; Convert to profile and **Turn your printer colour management OFF!
Ideally you will be working on a calibrated and profiled monitor, and you know how to use profiles, which will enable you to work around this problem as the professionals do.
Ideally you need a monitor calibrator - these are not expensive and they come with software, such as the Monaco Optix or the Spyder... they are a lot cheaper than getting your prints and image preparation wrong, in which case, if you are using destructive editing techniques, you will be damaging your image quality as well as wasting time and effort.
