How do i achieve this color effect in photoshop?

how do i edit a picture in photoshop 7 to take a color photo and gradually desaturate it more and more as it goes down the picture? How do i achieve this color effect in photoshop?
Use a hue/saturation adjustment layer and then put a gradation on the adjustment layer's mask (or paint it in). Take a look http://i44.tinypic.com/2qinvc1.jpg

EDIT: that's odd, nothing there would add vibrancy - in my example, the bottom of my picture looks exactly like it did without the gradated saturation adjustment layer - take a look http://i39.tinypic.com/2ilgfub.jpg The only thing I can think of is that you hit another slider in the hue/saturation window. Or, not that I can match your problem with this, but I just discovered that you can change the layer blending mode (at the top of the layer palette) on an adjustment layer - make sure it's at Normal.

If you don't get an answer that works from someone else, and/or you want to keep fiddling around with my help, I can take a look at a screenshot from you and see if I can figure it out. You can email me if you want. How do i achieve this color effect in photoshop?
Open the photo. Select your rectangular marquee tool. In the feather box (tool bar) set the feather to 250 for the most gradual desaturation, and lower for a less gradual (as low as 20). Select the entire middle 1/3 of the picture from left to right with your rectangular marquee. Click Image%26gt;Adjustments%26gt;Hue and Saturation (Or CTL+U) and set saturation to -50.

Next, Click Select%26gt;Decelect. Now, repeat the process by selection the bottom 1/3 of the picture from left to right. Click Image%26gt;Adjustments%26gt;Hue and Saturation (Or CTL+U) and set saturation to -100. Select%26gt;Deselect.
